Why
Spay/Neuter?
- The reproductive potential of cats and dogs is phenominal:
- One pair of dogs can lead to over 67,000 offspring in 6 years.
- One pair
of cats can lead to over 60,088 offspring in 6 years.
- as per Spay USA - 1-800-248-spay
- Free-roaming animals
create hazards of bites, scratches, accidents, etc. for the general
public.
- Rutherford County has a serious problem with overpopulation
of dogs and cats.
- Over 6 to 8 THOUSAND dogs and cats are brought
into the shelter or picked up each year.
- ONLY 20% are reclaimed or
adopted (1200-2000).
- The rest are DESTROYED (4800-6000).
17 million dogs and cats were destroyed in shelters in the 1980's. This
dropped to 12 million in the 1990's.
In 2005, this number has dropped to 4.5 million due to the aggressive
spay/neuter programs.
- Spayed and neutered animals generally make better, more loyal pets.
- Neutering does not reduce the animal's sense of protection of his
home and pack.
- Spayed/neutered animals do not become fat and lazy (at least as a
result of the operation).
Spaying a female pet:
- Eliminates the heat cycle
- Ends crying and nervous pacing and attempts
to escape
- Stops unwelcome visits by hordes of suitors
Neutering a male pet:
- Stops the mating drive and related fighting
- Reduces the urge to roam
- Ends mounting of furniture and people's legs
- Reduces or stops spraying
Spaying and neutering provide long-term health benefits by providing
protection from:
- Breast cancer
- Male genital problems (enlarged prostate, prostate cancer, testicular
cancer, other tumors)
- Uterine diseases
- Mastitis (inflammation of the breast)
- Ovarian cysts
- Miscarriage and complications of delivery
